Katy Meaby is an experienced Counsellor
and Therapist. She qualified in 1990, with a Diploma in Psychodynamic
Counselling. She then worked extensively with clients from MIND
and other organisations, developing a specialisation in the field
of mental health and well-being.
Katy's greatest asset
is her ability to talk and empathise with a wide range of people
from all walks of life. Her greatest strength
is her inner resource and mental toughness, which have seen her
through some very traumatic and difficult times.
Katy says, "Way back in 1996,
I first began to formulate in my mind, an idea for a business in Counselling.
My research took me far and wide, culminating in a meeting wiht a
Marketing Consultant in London. We met for several hours. She was
very excited about my plans for my business, and actively encouraged
me to take the plunge, having given me inspiration to believe in myself
and pursue my goals.
As 1996 drew to a close, I decided
that I would specialise in loss and bereavement, separation and divorce,
and the recognition and management of depression, all areas of which
I had some personal experience in.
During the early part of 1997, I started
thinking about what I wanted to call my business. I knew I wanted
to create something new, different and unique. A Company that I would
be proud of, synonymous with quality, expertise and professionalism.
Then came the big 'Eureka' moment! The name I chose literally sprung
out from the page of a booklet. I then chose a headline, which is
also a benefit, and completed it with a nice dolphin logo. All this
ties in with a feeling of positive thoughts and emotions, leading
ultimately to greater well-being and happiness. This then led to the
next phase of development.
Eureka is unique in terms of its thinking.
My raison d'être was to deliver a Company which would aim to
change the public's perception of what counselling is all about. Rather
than seeing counselling as a weakness and negative situation, a failing
somewhere along the line, it could be viewed as an emotionally rewarding
and fulfilling experience, with a positive outcome. I wanted Eureka
to be associated with positive thoughts and imbue a sense of well-being.
"Promoting positive well-being"
is akin to the relatively new movement known as Positive Psychology.
I now use the Person-centred approach, which is based on the assumption
that human beings have an inherent tendency toward growth, development
and optimal functioning. So it seems that my idea is beginning to
take root, and that it is increasingly being regarded as a positive
and constructive experience, leading to greater well-being. In the
words of a former mentor, "You are far ahead of your
time"".
Katy maintains a private practice
with special emphasis on the treatment of anxiety and panic attacks,
loss, grief, depression, work-related stress, marital/relationship
issues, and Post Traumatic Stress Disorder. She has also created a
unquie development Programme, which aims to help people in a number
of distinct, yet complementary ways. Using a combination of heuristic
tools and methods, clients are encouraged to take more control, become
more confident, increase their self-esteem, and thereby live more
emotionally fulfilled lives.
Katy brings a wealth of expertise
and experience to her entrepreneurial business, utilising an extensive
education and membership in numerous industry related associations
including the Federation of Small Businesses and The British Association
for Counselling and Psychotherapy. Katy has been a guest speaker at
groups as diverse as The Manic Depression Fellowship, and Anchor Housing
Southern Counties. She has given talks on stress and strategies for
preventing it to various business groups, published an article on
Positive Thinking in Sussex Enterprise Business News and has also
twice been a guest on Spirit FM.
